African Financial Markets Database (AFMD)
Access to accurate, harmonized and consistent data and lack of technological infrastructure are among the major challenges for the development of sound financial markets in Africa. For this reason, the AfDB under the AFMI proposes the creation of a comprehensive database to provide updated, reliable and complete information on African financial markets pursuing the following main goals:
- Improve availability and transparency of African Fixed Income Markets related Data
- Reconcile data produced by several institutions using different concepts and method
- Ensure sustainability of development of statistics in Africa
The project of creating an African Financial Markets Database (AFMD) are organized in two stages as portrayed in the Figure below:
Schematic of the AFMD

Stage 1
Stage 1 focuses on the enhancement of data collection and management capabilities within the continent. Tasks and activities during this stage address issues such as the access to accurate data and data harmonization and consistency.
Stage 2
Stage 2 will consist of the creation of a database and a Web portal on African Financial Markets. The Web portal will provide users full access to information contained in the AFMD plus a wide variety of documentation and additional information contained in both, public and private internet sites.
