Projects & Activities
The Bank gives priority to the water and sanitation sector as a way of assisting its Regional Member Countries (RMCs) to achieve the objectives of poverty reduction and economic growth. Interventions in the water and sanitation sectors have a unique potential to contribute to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) on poverty, health, education, and gender. The Bank’s portfolio in the water and sanitation sector includes drinking water supply, water resources management, sanitation and hygiene, capacity building and policy reform, among others.

The Bank will continue to increase its support to the sector to enable its RMCs accelerate progress towards the water MDGs and strengthen their capacity in integrated water resources management. In support of this, AfDB’s financing in the coming years for water and sanitation operations is expected to exceed US$ 600 million per annum, including the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Initiative (RWSSI) Trust Fund, and financing from the African Water Facility (AWF).
