Overview and key elements of interventions

  • The Bank Group has been supporting the water sector in the Gambia since 1985, and to date, a total amount of UA 13.1 million has been invested.
  • Previous Bank support includes the Banjul Sewerage and Drainage Project (1985-1993), the Greater Banjul Water Supply Project (1988-1993), and more recently, support in financing a feasibility study for the Greater Banjul Water Supply and Sanitation Master Plan in 2006.
  • The Bank currently has two on-going operations in the water sector, namely
    • (i) ‘Support to the Water Sector Reform Project’ financed by the African Water Facility which was approved in 2010 and launched in 2011; and
    • (ii) Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Project which was approved and launched in 2012.

On-going project

The Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Project (RWSSI) - UA 4.95 million:

  • The project covers the five rural regions of the Gambia. The aim of the Project is to improve access to safe water supply and sanitation in the rural areas from the current level of about 70% to 72% for water supply and from 40% to 44% for sanitation by 2015. The main components of the project are: a) water supply and sanitation infrastructure b) institutional strengthening and capacity building; and c) hygiene promotion and education.
  • The Project’s main outputs include;
    • 18 new multi-village solar powered water supply systems;
    • rehabilitation, and up-grade of 4 simple water systems into multi-village solar powered systems;
    • improved sanitation facilities in schools, rural health centers and public places;
    • institutional strengthening and capacity building;
    • community education in sanitation and personal hygiene.
  • The project will contribute to serving 65,000 people in rural Gambia.
  • The RWSSP will be implemented over a four-year period, from 2012-2015. The total Project cost is UA 4.95 million, sourced from the following: ADF Grant of UA 1.11 million (22%), Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Initiative (RWSSI) Trust Fund of Euro 4 million (equivalent of UA 3.58 million) (73%), Government contribution of UA 0.15 million (3%) and beneficiary community contributions of UA 0.11million (2%).
