Overview & key elements of interventions in Mauritius
- The African Development Bank Group commenced operations in the Republic of Mauritius in 1978.
- It has invested over USD 150 million on concessionary terms in all sectors of the country’s economy.
- In the water and sanitation sector, the Bank has financed three projects and two studies for close to USD 50 million.
- The Bank’s funding in the water and sanitation sector is fully in line with the country’s Strategic Development Plan and the Bank’s 2009 – 2013 Country Strategy for the country.
- The Bank’s current project portfolio includes the on-going Plaines Wilhems Sewerage Project, Stage I accounting for 23.3% of net commitments. The objective of the project is to ensure environmental sustainability by averting and reversing the potential for environmental degradation of surface and groundwater resources by wastewater through improved collection and treatment of sewage, and disposal of effluent and sludge from the Plaines Wilhems catchments area.
- The Bank is also currently financing the Mauritius Wastewater Master plan Study targeting the 2010-2033 planning horizon.

- The 1989-2009 Mauritius Wastewater Master plan Study
- The Port Louis Water Supply Project
- The Port Louis Sewerage , Stage III Project
- In line with the Bank’s 2008-2012 Medium Term Strategy and the Mauritius Medium Term Development Framework Policy, it is anticipated that the Bank will continue to be a key development partner in the Mauritius water and sanitation sector.
