Overview & key elements of interventions
- The African Development Bank Group commenced operations in Nigeria in 1971.
- It has invested over USD 3.75 billion (UA 2.5 billion*) on concessionary terms in all sectors of the country’s economy.
- In the water and sanitation sector, the Bank has to-date financed over USD 904.5 million (UA 603 million).
- The Bank’s funding in the water and sanitation sector is fully in line with the country’s strategic development plan and the Bank’s Country Strategy for Nigeria.
- The Bank’s current water and sanitation project portfolio includes the on-going Rural Water and Sanitation Sub programmes in Yobe and Osun States and the Urban Water Supply; Sanitation improvement Project in Oyo and Taraba States; and the Zaria Water Supply Expansion and Sanitation Project in kaduna.
- Past flagship projects in the water and sanitation sector completed in the country with Bank financing include the Multi State Water Supply and Plateau State Water Supply Projects.
- In line with the Country Strategy Paper 2005-2009 (updated to 2011) and the National Economic Empowerment and Development Strategy (NEEDS), it is anticipated that the Bank will continue to be a key development partner in the Nigerian water and sanitation sector.
