Background Information
Bilateral relations between the AfDB and UNFPA began in 1988. The areas of cooperation between both institutions mainly cover initiatives on girls’ enrolment, vaccination, maternal health, tuberculosis, malaria, HIV/AIDS and its impact on children and families, water and sanitation, and Guinea worm eradication.
Joint Initiatives
- Effective collaboration on the Forum on Harmonization for Health in Africa (HHA).
- Collaboration on reproductive and basic socio-demographic data: merger of ADB macro-economic data with UNFPA socio-demographic data. Other forms of collaboration: monitoring/evaluation of Poverty Reduction Strategy Papers (PRSPs); support for reproductive health in regional member countries (RMCs); joint evaluation of institutional support and capacity building projects; joint appraisal and implementation of multinational HIV/AIDS projects along the Mano River in Cote d’Ivoire, Liberia and Guinea; preparation of the training manual on integrating the population dimension into projects; collaboration to implement the action plans of conferences on population and development.
Formal Arrangements and Financial Contribution
The first AfDB-UNFPA Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed in 1992 and subsequently amended in 2003.
