Background Information
Bilateral relations between the ADB and UNICEF were initiated in 1988. Education and health are the main areas of cooperation.
Joint Initiatives
- Forum on Harmonization for Health in Africa (HHA): participation in discussions on aspects related to harmonization and good practices.
- Priority areas of collaboration include girls’ education, vaccination, maternal health, tuberculosis, malaria, HIV/AIDS and its impact on children and families, water and sanitation, and Guinea worm eradication. Activities relate to the project cycle, co-financing, studies, workshops, seminars and dialogue with RMCs.
- Collaboration on major initiatives concerning the MDGs (Millennium Development Goals), NEPAD, water and sanitation, HIV/AIDS and intervention in post-conflict countries.
Formal Arrangements and Financial Contribution
The first AfDB-UNICEF memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed in July 1988 and subsequently amended for the first time on November 20, 1992. The most recent MoU was signed on April 1, 2005.
