Infrastructure Rehabilitation Assistance after Meteorological Extreme Events
The AfDB is also present during extreme meteorological events that happen in the continent.
Examples of these interventions include:
- In the wake of the 1997-1998 El-Niño torrential rains, the African Development Fund extended to Kenya a loan of UA (Unit of Accounts) 11.52 million to finance 81% of transport infrastructure rehabilitation in some of the affected areas of the country. The works were executed over the period September 1999 to December 2001 with a significant cost under-run of 30%.
- For the same objective, a loan of UA 9.75 million was also provided to Tanzania to finance transport infrastructure repairs.
- An ADF loan of UA 6.52 was approved in December 2000 for Madagascar to finance transport sector rehabilitation works in the wake of three cyclones in February 2000.
- Earlier, an emergency aid programme of UA 10.75 million for the road sector, approved in September 1982, for the repair of the damage caused by cyclones during 1981-1982.
