Aly Abou-Sabaa

Aly Abou-Sabaa, a civil engineer by training, was appointed in December 2012 as Vice President of the African Development Bank (AfDB)’s Sector Operation (OSVP), in charge of Governance, Agriculture and Human Development.  

Mr. Abou-Sabaa is a seasoned professional, who is bringing to the OSVP Complex 29 years of experience and knowledge in a wide spectrum of fields.  These include management, administration, project management, climate change, green development, agriculture development, and infra-structural development.  He has also made significant contributions in the sectors of natural resources management of large and small scale public and private sector projects in 32 countries in Africa, Asia, and USA.

Prior to the current position, Mr. Abou-Sabaa, an Egyptian national, has held many managerial positions at the AfDB.  He was Director and Chairman of the Coordination on Climate Change (CCCC) from April 2011 through September 2012.  In that capacity, he enhanced the coordination of climate change related work across the Bank, including advocacy efforts in major Global forums on Climate Change and Green Development. He also co-chaired the Bank work on Green Growth.  Prior to this assignment with the CCCC, he held the position of Director of Agriculture and Agro industry Development (2007 to 2011) after being the Manager of the Agriculture Division of North Africa, then Manager for Central and West Africa Agriculture Division (2004 to 2007).

Before joining the AfDB in 1992, as a Civil Irrigation Engineer, Mr. Abou-Sabaa held several managerial, as well as professional positions in Egypt and the USA, including being the Manager of the Engineering Division of Agriculture, Engineering and Commerce (AGRENCO), Resident Engineer with Engineering Consulting Group and CH2HILL JV Group, Irrigations Engineer with IRRIDELCO, and Site Engineer with the ARAB CONTRACTORS.

Mr. Abou-Sabaa holds a Master of Science in Civil Engineering from Montana State University, USA (1989) and a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from University of Alexandria, Egypt (1983).
