24/05/2012 - Millions of people living in the Baro-Akobo-Sobat (BAS) area of the Nile Basin are to benefit from a range of multi-purpose water resources projects to be planned by the Nile Basin Initiative. On May 4, the African Development Bank approved a €2 million grant from the African Water Facility to finance the development study needed to attract the investments required to implement them. The overall project is supported jointly by the New Partnership for Africa’s Development- Infrastructure Project Preparation Facility (NEPAD-IPPF).

23/05/2012 - On May 10, a high level meeting chaired by President Donald Kaberuka, former British Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, and Tim Berners-Lee, founder of the Web Foundation elicited a lively debate among 10 Ministers of Education and Science and Technology from Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Morocco, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Uganda; who met with officials of Intel, Cisco, Alcatel-Lucent, HP, Adobe, and Microsoft among other leading technology companies in Africa. Other country governments represented were Benin, Burundi, Egypt, Ivory Coast, Mauritius, Nigeria and Rwanda.

11/05/2012 - Le président de la Banque africaine de développement (BAD), Donald Kaberuka a fait observer que « L’économie africaine, qui dépend lourdement de l’exploitation de ses ressources naturelles, doit passer à une économie de transformation ». C’est l’un des messages-clés, lors de la première journée du Forum économique mondial sur l’Afrique organisé à Addis Abeba, du 9 au 11 mai 2012.

10/05/2012 - Today at the World Economic Forum on Africa in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, high-level representatives from the U.S. Department of State, U.S. Agency for International Development, the African Development Bank, Microsoft, Nokia, infoDev, DEMO, and the World Economic Forum launched a new partnership to promote innovation and entrepreneurship in Africa. The Liberalizing Innovation Opportunity Nations (LIONS@FRICA) partnership seeks to mobilize the knowledge, expertise and resources of leading public and private institutions to encourage and enhance Africa’s innovation ecosystem and to spur entrepreneurship across the continent.

08/05/2012 - Ethiopia’s efforts to increase energy efficiency and diversify its hydro-dependent energy mix through renewable energy got a USD 50 million boost from the Climate Investment Funds (CIF) committee meetings last week when Ethiopia’s investment plan under the Scaling Up Renewable Energy Program for Low Income Countries (SREP) was endorsed in full by CIF committee members.The decision came during the week-long CIF committee meetings in Washington, D.C. from 30 April to 4 May. As implementing agency of the CIF, the African Development Bank (AfDB) was there to bring African interests to the table.

23/04/2012 - Teams from Ethiopia, Kenya, Liberia, Mali, and Tanzania joined counterparts from around the world at the annual pilot countries meeting for the Scaling Up Renewable Energy Program in Low Income Countries (SREP) in Nairobi, Kenya from 5 to 7 March 2012. Held annually to provide a space for pilot countries to discuss experiences, lessons learned and best practices in developing and activating SREP investment plans, the meeting this year offered African nations the opportunity to showcase their progress in advancing initiatives in renewable energy.

23/04/2012 - Ethiopia and Mali are set to begin preparing renewable energy projects specified in their investment plan under the Scaling Up Renewable Energy Program in Low Income Countries (SREP) after successfully achieving investment plan endorsement from the SREP sub-committee at their meeting on 8 March 2012 in Nairobi, Kenya. SREP is a program of the Climate Investment Funds (CIF) of which the African Development Bank (AfDB) is an implementing agency.

The main topic of discussion will be "In a World and an Africa that is changing fast and fundamentally, how can Africa best prepare its leaders of tomorrow?’.
