Description
The study will provide detailed designs and tender documents for the water supply and identification of how best sanitation facilities can be provided to the towns as detailed below:-
Town Population Demand(cubic Metres)
Humera 20,530 1,300 Motta 16,580 1,000 Shoa Robit 14,000 850 Hagere Mariam 17,020 1,050 Tinsae Berhane 21,310 1,400 Gidole 21,000 1,260 Jinka 13,529 820
Objectifs
The aim of the study is to investigate and confirm adequacy of existing water sources and define the most cost effective scheme for each of the 8 towns. Detailed designs and tender documents shall be prepared so that the project will be ready for implementation.
The study will also include the preliminary investigations to identify how the various parts of these towns can be served with sanitation facilities.
Verifiable Indicators - Consultant to undertake the study has been engaged latest 9 months after funds allocation/approval.
Justificatif
The eight towns comprising the proposed study, are part of the 50 towns that were in the last National Ten Year Development(1984 -94) for Ethiopia. Government has given priority for the allocation of resources to the "social" sector. The Bank Group has intervened in the sector since 1975 through 9projects/studies. The provision of adequate supply of potable water and improvement of sanitation in Ethiopia, will require substantial finncial resources far beyond the affordability of the Country. The need to improve these facilities is particularly urgent in Ethiopia due to the perpetual drought in the region.
Bénéfices
If the recommendations of the study are implemented through a follow-on project, this would result into improvement of the health of the residents in the 8 towns and thus improve the productivity of thepopulation in these towns. there would also be a reduction of medical expenses arising from the treatment of water releted diseases. The resultant socio-economic well being of the population will contribute to the stability of the country.
