i)Construction of Stabilization Ponds at three principal locations (Densu Delta, New Burma Camp, and New Legon);
(ii)Construction of sewers and associated pumping facilities to transfer from Teshie/Nungua (Sengo Lagoon) to New Burma Camp Sewage Treatment Works;
(iii)Construction of sea outfall of two coastal sites (Densu Delta and New Burma Camp) and discharge to water course for inland site (New Legon);
(iv)Rehabilitation of existing plants and sewers in the city;
(v)Construction of public toilets in low income residential areas;
(vi)Provision of underground night soil holding tanks in areas where the use of pan latrine is still prevalent; vii)Assistance to individual householders to provide suitable individual facilities; viii)Provision of seven sludge discharge points; ix)Provision of 12 sludge tanks and associated equipment
The objectives of the project are:
(i) To implement the least cost and technically acceptable sanitation facility for disposing off waste water from the city of Accra, in an environmentally acceptable manner, to meet the demands up to year 2025.
(ii) To provide technical assistance to the executing Agency to enable it operate and maintain the systems on a sustainable basis. The Technical Assistance will include proposals for institutional arrangements covering the management and financing of the sanitation facilities.
The development of sanitation facilities in Accra has not kept pace with the development water supply. Besides, the few existing sewerage facilities have become non-operational due to lack of maintenance and as a result the wastewater from various on-site facilities are discharged to surface watercourse without adequate treatment.
