Description

The proposed project focus on the development of horticultural and livestock products (poultry and sheep) in the Western and North Bank Regions of The Gambia. The project adopt a food chain approach to address the constraints affecting the sector at all stages of the chain from access to production inputs, to processing and marketing. The project comprises 3 components: A - Production, Processing and marketing of livestock and horticultural produces; B - Capacity building and C - Project Management. The proposed technologies include: improvement of water supply and distribution (boreholes, solar pumping systems and secondary water reservoirs), improved land preparation (equipment), storage facilities and transportation materials to reduce post harvest losses, promotion of GAPs, provision of inputs (fertilizers, drugs feed), provision of livestock rearing infrastructures (poultry and small ruminants), processing infrastructures, and the strengthening of health services.

Objectifs

The objective is to increase, on a sustainable basis, the production and marketability of horticultural and livestock products and by-products, nationwide.

Justificatif

The project design concentrates on smallholder livestock and horticultural production improvement, with which beneficiaries are already familiar. In adopting a food chain approach the project will focus on two types of commodities: horticultural and livestock products. Horticulture and livestock remain key priorities for the country and have potential in facing poverty and promoting economic growth as underlined in the 2007 Millennium Development Report. Vegetables and Livestock production are traditional rural income generation activities. Almost every rural family possesses a small animal husbandry and most of the women work in community gardens. In that regard the project should significantly improve family's livelihood. Furthermore with increased production levels and strengthened processing and marketing facilities, the project will directly improve food security in Urban Centers and reduce the reliance on imports. The choice of horticultural and livestock products is also motivated by the expanding tourism industry which currently rely on imports for the supply of the hotels and which could support the transformation of the Gambian Agro-industry. The project will build on existing local associations - kafos as well as enhance their capacity to manage development projects at local level.

Bénéfices

The 30 communities constituting the project areas have been identified based on the local livestock, poultry and horticulture production potential, and the processing and marketing opportunities. The project will support the managerial and entrepreneurial capacities of the selected communities in order to improve livestock productivity and quality. The project will directly benefit a population of about 3,000 households. It is expected to increase: (1) the volume of marketed horticultural produce by 125%; (2) the number of poultry birds by 1775 % and (3) the number of heads of small ruminants by 952% at completion. With increased production levels and strengthened processing and marketing facilities, the project will directly improve food security in urban centres and reduce the reliance on imports, particularly of meat products, and contribute to the medium term country response to the current soaring food crisis by providing local alternatives to the consumer. The project will also indirectly support and be supported by the expanding tourism industry which currently relies on imports of vegetables for the supply of hotels and which could trigger the transformation of the Gambian agro-industry.
