Objectifs
The programme will have substantial economic, social and environmental impact. The economic impact on the areas covered as well as that of the country as a whole, which will result in production of more goods and services, higher income and increased consumption by the population. The time savings and the reduction in absenteeism from work would be utilized for productive purposes and this will lead to the raising of the rural incomes. The reduction of water-borne diseases will result in more economically active population and less expenditure in medications for treatment. The economic impact of the programme will eventually assist in the reduction of poverty in the rural areas covered. ..
Justificatif
Access to adequate water supply and sanitation facilities is very limited Sierra Leone and the situation has deteriorated during the civil war in the country. Government is presently engaged in the rehabilitation of the basic infrastructure in the country in order to provide basic services to the population. The provision of potable water supply and basic sanitation facilities is therefore seen as a major priority in government's medium term economic programs The amelioration of the living conditions of the population in both urban and rural areas is one of the major pillars of government's economic and social policies and programme. The project covers three provinces in the country. The areas to be covered are facing serious shortage of water supply and sanitation facilities, which is hindering the return of displaced population to these areas. The proposed project will provide potable water to the population in the areas concerned for up to 15 years and will improve the social conditions of the population and encourage increase in economic activities. The project will complement the Bank's past intervention in the sector
Bénéfices
The project will have several economic and social benefits and will in the long-run contribute to the poverty reduction in the project area and help achieve the Millennium Development Goals. The economic benefits include savings on the outlays on water expenditure; timesavings spent in searching for water and reduced medical costs. the social benefits include improve health of the population in the project area and greater school attendance by children especially girls.
Social and health impact include reduction in water-borne diseases, increased school attendance especially by girls, participation of women in the design and management of the programme and overall increase in the disposable income which will lead to improved living conditions and family welfare.
The provision of potable water supply will also have positive Environmental. The living conditions and health standards of the population in question would be improved through the provision of potable water, improved sanitation facilities and promotion
