Overview & key elements of interventions
- The African Development Bank Group commenced operations in Zambia in 1971.
- It has invested over USD 1 billion on concessionary terms in all sectors of the country’s economy.
- In the water and sanitation sector, the Bank has to-date financed 12 operations for close to USD 341 million.
- The ongoing operations in the water and sanitation sector fully comply with Zambia’s National Long Term Vision 2030, with its Medium Term Plan and the Bank’s Medium Term Strategy.
- The Bank’s current portfolio in the water and sanitation sector includes a) Central Province Eight Centres Water Supply and Sanitation Project, b) National Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Program, c) Nkana Water Supply and Sanitation Project and d) African Water Facility financed studies.
- Past completed flagship projects in the water and sanitation sector financed by the Bank include:
- The Central Province Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Project
- The Lusaka Water Supply and Rehabilitation Project phase I and II
- The Kitwe Water Supply and Sanitation Project phase I
- The Ndola Sewerage Disposal works
In line with the Bank’s 2008-2012 Medium Term Strategy and Zambia’s Vision 2030 and Medium Term Development Framework Policy, it is anticipated that the Bank will continue to be a key development partner in the Zambian water and sanitation sector.
