Argentina

Background

Argentina joined the African Development Fund (ADF) in 1979 and the African Development Bank (ADB) in 1985. Argentina has recently shown interest in providing technical assistance to the Bank. Furthermore, Argentina is considering further cooperation through technical cooperation agreements. Argentina’s interested is mainly in  the agro-industry and agricultural development sector.

In a recent visit on the occasion of the Partnerships Forum 2010, members of the Argentine government met with the Agricultural Department Director to discuss further engagement through the provision of both co-financing and technical assistance to the department on a project basis.

Joint Initiatives

The AfDB and Argentina are currently discussing further engagement in cooperation activities. Argentina’s experience in the agricultural sector and the sharing of experiences with other Latin American countries can both be implemented in the African region. So far, Argentina has proposed to contribute to the training of African civil servants in the ministries of agriculture in Argentina as well as the co-financing of agricultural projects, particularly the research and extension component.

Additional South-South cooperation is expected through contributions to the South-South Cooperation Trust Fund. However discussions are still at the preliminary stage.
