Message from the Director

To fulfill its mission to support capacity building on the African continent, the Joint Africa Institute is offering 25 courses and seminars in 2008 covering a rich menu of topics of interest to institutions dealing with economic and structural problems faced by African countries.  The Institute is adapting its curriculum to the emerging needs for training in Africa. In 2008, it will offer new training events to cover the economics of climate change, remittances statistics, and sovereign liability management.

Starting in 2008, JAI is introducing a new course on Economic Policies for Growth and Poverty Reduction that will be a truly multilateral event. The JAI’s three parental institutions, the African Development Bank (AfDB), the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and the World Bank will all contribute to the design and delivery of the course.  It is hoped that this course will be offered every year, in English and French in alternate years.

Three high level seminars are also planned.  These seminars will bring together policy makers, practitioners, and academics to debate issues of current concern to many African countries.

Since its establishment in 1999, the JAI has welcomed to its training events more than 4500 participants from almost all countries in Africa, representing government agencies, civil society, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector. We look forward to welcoming you among the participants in 2008.
