Mwangiwa Githinji

Dr. Mwangi wa Githinji earned his Ph.D. from the University of California, Riverside.  His primary interests are in the areas of Development Economics, Political Economy and Environmental Economics with particular attention to Africa.  He is most interested in issues of class, gender and income distribution in relation to transition. Mwangi is the author of Ten Millionaires and Ten Million Beggars (Ashgate Press 2000) which examines issues of income distribution, class, and gender in Kenya, and the co-author (with Robert Pollin and James Heintz) of An Employment Targeted Economic Program for Kenya (Edward Elgar 2008).

In addition he has published book chapters and journal articles on economic development in Africa.  He has consulted widely for UN agencies on economic issues in specific African countries and the region as a whole.  Mwangi was chair of Africana Studies and Associate Professor of Economics at Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania, before moving to the University of Massachusetts-Amherst in 2006 where he is an Assistant Professor of Economics.
