Argentina became a member of the African Development Fund (ADF) in 1979 and of the African Development Bank (AfDB) in 1985. The country’s pledge to ADF-XII amounted to US $15 million. Argentina is also considering strengthening further partnerships through a technical cooperation arrangement with the Bank Group. Argentina emphasizes the principles of solidarity and believes that middle-income countries should also contribute to development. Its main areas of interest are agro-industry and agricultural development.
Argentina and the Bank Group are currently discussing further engagement in cooperation activities. Argentina’s experience in the agriculture sector and the sharing of experiences with other Latin American countries can both be implemented in the African continent. So far, the Bank has submitted a proposal of receiving a technical assistant or a secondee who would contribute technical inputs to the Bank’s operational activities relating to agriculture and agro-industry in the Agriculture Department. Also, the Bank is keen to work with the Government of Argentina to find co-financing opportunities for Argentina in the agriculture sector.
Moreover, Argentina’s engagement in South-South Cooperation through contribution to the South-South Cooperation Trust Fund is expected and discussions are being carried on.
