At the end of this analysis on environmental challenges as they relate to the achievement the SDGs, it should be said that the progress towards sustainable development in Africa will depend largely on demographic and climatic trajectories, as well as the economic development models to be established by African countries to ensure the growth and performance of their economies and to effectively reduce poverty and check climate change. The various indicators analyzed in this paper show that climate change accelerates environmental degradation with repercussions on Africa’s key production... |

Green growth is an integral element of the green economy, capable of delivering very low-carbon and climate-compatible development. A green economy ensures improved human well-being, social inclusion and equity, while critically reducing environmental risks and ecological scarcities. For this reason, transitioning to green growth was selected as a key objective in the African Development Bank’s Ten Year Strategy 2013–22. In a green economy, income growth and employment are driven by investments aimed at reducing carbon emissions and pollution while supporting biodiversity, as well as energy... |

Entrenched values, norms, and organizational arrangements hamper policy change at the individual, organizational, and institutional levels. Equally, political and geopolitical dynamics constrain policy choices. Most countries, including those in Africa, still focus their policies and regulatory institutions on ensuring the supply of energy, rather than managing demand and the sustainability of supplies. Imposing pollution taxes in economies where this is not considered to be a problem will generate resistance from decision-makers and the public alike. Factional economic interests can hinder... |

Governments in Africa are eager to minimize the risks associated with green growth and enhance the opportunities it brings. Green growth is a departure from the resource-intensive business-as-usual growth of the past that has led to the depletion of natural and other resources. The main risks discussed in this paper are low levels of green growth readiness; potential for dumping entry-level clean technologies; and conditional trade for green growth. Opportunities include the completion of old renewable energy mega-projects and a chance to build climate-resilient infrastructure and settlements... |

Africa has had some of the fastest economic growth rates in the world during the past decade. During this period, Sub-Saharan countries continued to grow at an average rate exceeding 5 percent (AfDB et al. 2012). During 2010 and 2011, Africa’s GDP grew by 5 percent and 3.4 percent, respectively, despite the economic crisis in Europe, and while North Africa adjusted to new political circumstances. The economic outlook for the continent continues to be largely positive: sustained growth rates of 4.5 percent and above are expected in the coming years.
