2004 - Mauritania - Country Governance Profile
The Islamic Republic of Mauritania (IRM) is one of the least developed countries in Africa, with three-quarters of its territory covered by the Sahara desert. For over a decade, the IRM has been pursuing ambitious reform policies that have affected the country’s entire political, economic and social life. The implementation of the economic reform programme resulted in an annual growth rate of over 4.5% between 1992 and 2002, and significantly reduced financial imbalances. This good performance was accompanied by a significant decline in poverty and marked improvement in the key sustainable human development indicators.
