2006 AEC - Relaxing Export Supply Capacity Constraints and Promotion Export Expansion and Diversification in Africa: The Role of Special Export Development Strategies

Starting in October 1998, a unique collaboration among five institutions worked on a study of Africa’s prospects for economic and social development in the 21st century. The result of this effort was published in 2000 under the title Can Africa Claim the 21ST Century?. The report’s affirmative answer to this question was conditional upon positive movement along four fronts, including the broad area of reorienting trade policy with special emphasis on diversifying exports and pursuing regional integration, as a means of increasing competitiveness and diversifying African economies.
