Brochure - Promoting Africa as global player through high level policy dialogue on STI
There are alot of factors that inhibit and constrain the advancement of science technology and innovation (STI) in Africa. These include; insufficient and inadequate human capital, especially in the areas of manufacturing, construction, ICT, new energy technologies and life sciences. Also the weak links between research, policymaking and legal and regulatory frameworks particularly regarding intellectual property rights have a huge impact on research and innovation. Learning materials and research production are woefully inadequate, with just five African universities ranked among the top 500 worldwide; and less than 350 personnel in Research and Development (R&D) per million inhabitants in Africa compared to an average of 2,750 in developed countries.
