Democratic Republic of Congo-Semi-Urban Drinking Water Supply and Sanitation Project (PEASU)
The Semi-urban Water Supply and Sanitation Project supports developmental efforts by the Government of the Democratic Republic of Congo, with priority on strengthening water supply and sanitation, accessing safe drinking water and sanitation in semi-urban Centers where poverty increased dramatically during the years of instability due to rural exodus, looting and deterioration of drinking water installations. The project is part of the Government's development strategy, particularly the PRGFP 2006-2008 and 2011-2015,under which the authorities mostly seek to promote strong growth and reduce poverty. Furthermore, the Constitution of the Democratic Republic of Congo stipulates in Articles 48 and 53 that all Congolese have the right to good quality water. Based on these Articles and other national (DSCRP I, sector policy on drinking water and sanitation) and international instruments (MDGs, Vision of Africa, SADC, etc.),the Government has made access to water and sanitation one of its priorities.
