DRC - Project to Support the Alternative Welfare of Children and Young People Involved in the Cobalt Supply Chain (PABEA-COBALT) – ESMP Summary
Despite the existence of significant natural resources (forests, arable land, ores, water resources, etc.), the DRC is still one of the poorest countries in the world and ranks 176th out of 187 countries in the latest Human Development Index (UN, 2015). The poverty rate certainly dropped from 71 % to 64 % between 2005 and 2012, but remains high. In certain provinces of the country, mining activity is the main source of household income due to very low socioeconomic diversification. Work resulting from this activity is very poorly paid and takes place in indecent conditions. In the project area, it has increased the child labour phenomenon, especially in cobalt mines.
