Kenya - Support to the Enhancement of Quality and Relevance in Higher Education Science and Technology Project - Appraisal Report

19-Nov-2012

The project is aligned to the Kenya’s Vision 2030.The vision emphasizes quality education and training in science, technology and innovation (STI)in order to make Kenya a middle-income country by 2030 and to improve its competitiveness regionally and globally. The project aims to improve quality and relevance in mainly engineering and applied sciences in line with Kenya’s Vision 2030 priorities for STI. Universities are expected to provide the necessary human capacity to drive key productive sectors, which include roads, energy and manufacturing, among others outlined in Technical Annex 2.1. The Vision 2030 aims to increase Kenya’s forest cover from 3% to at least 4% and prevent environmental-related diseases and conflict. In this context, the Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies (WMI) intends to develop a “Green Campus,” with the overall aim of cultivating better environmental stewardship and management of resources. The WMI will operate like a “finishing school” for university students, researchers, policy makers, the private sector, community leaders and groups interested in good practices in environmental management and peace building.
