15-Jan-2014

This project performance evaluation report is concerned with the performance of the Mpira-Balaka Rural Water Supply and the District Water Supply Phase II Projects in Malawi.

The Mpira-Balaka Rural Water Supply and the District Water Supply Phase II projects were financed by ADF, TAF, DANIDA and the Government of Malawi. Two loans of UA 11.65 million (For Mpira-Balaka) and UA 13.46 million (for DWS II) for the works and construction supervision were granted to the Government of Malawi in November 1984 and May 1990 to meet 100% of the foreign exchange costs and part of the local costs. A supplementary loan was granted to GOM in November 1993 to finance the potential cost overrun of the DWS II project. Under the MpiraBalaka Project, a dam was constructed by a contractor and the treatment plant and associated primary and secondary distribution schemes were constructed by force account brigades of the Ministry of Works. Under the District Water Supply Phase II project, the dams of Kasungu and Mzuzu were constructed with the associated treatment plants, reservoirs and distribution schemes.
