Malawi - Smallholder Irrigation and Value Addition Project (SIVAP) - ESMP Summary

The Government of Malawi through the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has requested the Bank to support the Smallholder Irrigation and Value Addition Project which seeks to reduce poverty and ensure sustainable food security to the rural communities in Malawi by increasing agricultural productivity, promoting crop diversification and developing high potential value chains. The Project comprises three (3) complementary components, (i) Sustainable Land and Water Management Component comprising of two sub-components (development of new irrigation schemes and rehabilitation of existing irrigation schemes) focusing on sustainable land and water management activities, food security and risk management, (ii) Crop Diversification and Value Chain Development Component comprising of four sub-components (seed selection and multiplication, rain fed cropping, agro-processing and value addition, and support to market linkages) with emphasis on sustainable crop production and processing, and (iii) Institutional Strengthening and Capacity Building Component comprising of four subcomponent (support to public sector, support to farmer organizations, Monitoring and Evaluation, and project coordination) focusing on institutional strengthening, capacity building, nutrition education, project coordination and monitoring and evaluation. The Project will be implemented in five (5) districts, namely Karonga, Nkhota-kota, Salima, Machinga and Chikhwawa.
