Although the relative share of the informal economy has been going down in Africa, it nonetheless remains a significant part of the continent’s modern economy. In 2010, the average share of the informal sector was approximately 40percent across the continent, down from 42 percent in 2000. Contrastingly, the relative contribution of the informal sector to annual output in developing countries in Asia stood at 25 percent in 2011. There are several factors that account for the presence of such a large number of firms and employment in the informal sector.
