Regional - Appraisal Report - Satellite and Weather Information for Disaster Resilience in West Africa

19-Jul-2016

Sub-Saharan Africa is one of the world's most vulnerable regions given its already critical exposure to the negative impacts of climate variability and climate change. This situation is expected to deteriorate further as a result of climate change. The Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) highlighted the potential sector impacts of climate change, and the areas likely to be hardest hit are agriculture and food security, water resources, health and infrastructure. The report states that by the end of the 21st century there will be a drop in rainfall over much of Africa and an increase in the frequency and severity of extreme climate conditions and induced events such as flooding, droughts, desertification, sand and dust storms, plagues of migratory locusts and water shortages.
