Working Paper 110 - Education and Employment in Malawi
Malawi is one of the least developed countries in the world. According to the UNDP Human Development Index, it ranked 162nd out of 179 countries in 2008. Adult literacy rate (70.9 percent – 112th position), combined primary-secondary-tertiary gross enrolment ratio (61.9 percent – 131st position) and life expectancy at birth (47 years – 167th position) are extremely low (UNDP, 2008). The country is also one of the poorest in the world in monetary terms, with a GDP per capita of USD 212 and PPP-USD 602 in 2008 (African Economic Outlook, 2009).
