CIF Annual Report 2020

Welcome to the African Development Bank and Climate Investment Funds (CIF) 2020 Annual Report. In this report, we invite you to explore developments in the Bank-CIF portfolio over the first 10 years of this partnership.

More than 25% of CIF funding goes to Africa. Since 2010, the African Development Bank has played an important role as a CIF implementing entity, advancing a growing portfolio of projects in renewable
energy, forestry, and resilience in Africa. As of 31 December 2020, the African Development Bank has approved 27 projects (of which seven are fully implemented) and channeled more than $2.8 billion in the continent.

The report highlights the achievements of 10 years of partnership between the Bank and CIF and, in particular, the results of CIF’s operations in Africa since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. CIF has been working with the Bank to help countries meet the major challenges at hand while simultaneously creating opportunities to build back better.

The report also provides access to important knowledge acquired during the year – in the form of publications, videos and events – and presents the major activities planned for 2021, as CIF continues exploring the establishment of six new targeted programs.

We hope this report offers you new insights into the Bank’s work to expand Africa’s access to climate financing through CIF. Hopefully, you also gain an understanding of how we are helping African countries tap into valuable and transformative concessional resources. Our goal is to tip the scale in favour of the much-needed climate action across the continent.
