ADF contributes to Tsetse Eradication in East and West Africa
The Project’s total loan will be shared by the 6 participating countries- Burkina Faso, Mali, Ghana, Ethiopia, Uganda and Kenya- while the grant will benefit the countries as well as PATTEC.
The share agreement in favor of Ethiopia, a loan for an amount of 9.55 million Units of Account (US$14.5 million) and a grant of 240, 000 Units of Account (US$ 364,000), has been signed with the Ethiopian Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Mr. Sufian Ahmed. The share agreement in favor of Uganda, a loan of UA 6, 55 Million (US$ 10 million) and a grant of UA 240,000 (US$ 364,000) with the Ugandan Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development of Uganda, Mr. Ezra Suruma.
The Creation of Sustainable Tsetse and Trypanosomiasis (T&T) Free Areas in East and West Africa Project backed by the ADF forms the first phase of a wider programme on the continental level, coordinated by the African Union "Pan-African T&T Eradication Campaign" (PATTEC).
This vast continent-wide project to fight against the menace of tsetse flies will help improve food security in the region in the first phase through the integration of suppression, control and eradication technologies while ensuring the reclaimed areas are equitably, sustainably and economically exploited.
