ADF Supports the Fight Against HIV/AIDS Among Refugees in West Africa
To help alleviate the plight of the refugees, the African Development Fund (ADF) has approved a multinational project in support of a Sub regional HIV/AIDS Programme for the Refugees, Internally Displaced People and their Host Communities in the Mano River Basin Countries and Côte D’Ivoire. A grant of US$ 3.4 million will contribute to this program.
The overall goal of the project is to support the Mano River Basin Countries and Côte d’Ivoire to meet Objective 6 of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which seeks to stop and begin to reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS by 2015.
The project has two major components: Strengthening of HIV/AIDS/Sexually Transmitted Infections prevention, control and treatment and Promotion of multi-sectoral and sub-regional co-ordination of HIV/AIDS/STI activities
The four beneficiary countries have demonstrated a strong commitment to collectively address HIV/AIDS as a serious development issue. ADF support to the Programme will cover four out of the nine cross border areas located in the Mano River Union (MRU) countries and Western Cote d’Ivoire. These areas are characterized by high influx of refugees, IDPs (Internally Displaced Populations) and population in transit.
The primary beneficiaries of the project will be the refugees, internally displaced persons and their host communities in the project areas. The total beneficiaries from the ADF intervention in the four sites are estimated at 1 million of which 35% are female headed households and nearly 50% are children.
Enhancement of HIV/AIDS/STIs’ preventive, control and management activities would be in large part targeted to women. They will also benefit from safe blood transfusion and improved reproductive health services. Health care providers involved in the fight against HIV/AIDS in the beneficiary countries will acquire skills for the prevention, control, management and treatment of STIs/HIV/AIDS and improved health care. Finally, activities under this project will help strengthen inter-country collaboration and foster a stronger sub-regional partnership for the fight against HIV/AIDS.
