AfDB provides Emergency Assistance to Asian Tsunami affected East African Coast Countries
The Acting Vice President for the North, South and East operations of the ADB Group, Mrs. Zeinab El Bakri, and the Ambassador of Seychelles to the Republic of France and the European Union, Mr. Callixte d’Offay, signed today in Tunis a grant for an amount of 330,000 Units of Account (UA*), equivalent to US$ 500, 000 to finance the Emergency assistance, a response for the December 2004 Asian Tsunami damages in Seychelles.
The Asian Tsunami disaster that hit the coastline of Somalia and Seychelles caused immense human suffering and damage to livelihoods and property in the north-eastern parts of Somalia and extensive infrastructural damage to the coastline areas of Seychelles.
In Seychelles, the objective of the Bank emergency assistance is to contribute to a return to normalcy through urgent minor repairs to road infrastructure and schools, as well as purchasing replacement fishing equipment. The reparation of roads will be in the districts where most fishing villages are found and will comprise mainly minor reparation works. These restorations will have a major social impact as it will give the public access to clinics, schools and public utilities infrastructures.
