The Bank supported a four-day workshop on Revitalizing Technical Vocational Education Training (TVET) for ECOWAS Countries in Abuja, between 17th-20th August, 2009. The primary objective of the workshop was to create a platform for knowledge and experience sharing in reforming, revitalizing and expanding national TVET systems in order to improve skills delivery, employability and mobility of the youth within ECOWAS states. In view of the importance the Bank attaches to the development of human capital for effective economic integration and growth through TVET, it provided conference materials for all the 73 participants from 15 ECOWAS countries. The workshop was launched by the Minister of Education, Sam Egwu.
The workshop culminated in twelve recommendations made to revitalize TVET in ECOWAS Countries. These include curricula and staff development to international standards, development of learning materials, establishment of regional centers of excellence, development of regional qualifications framework, establishment of TVET databases and policy development.
The Bank was praised for having supported such an event and urged to continue its support in the area of TVET and Higher Education Science and Technology (HEST).
