WHEN: 18-22 March, 2019

Africa Climate Week 2019 will take place between 18–22 March in Accra, Ghana, with a dynamic programme of activities.

The event, hosted by the Ghanaian government, follows the COP24 international climate negotiations, which concluded with the ‘Katowice Climate Package’, also known as the Paris Agreement Work Programme in December 2018. This is the first major climate-orientated event in 2019 to promote  practical implementation guidelines for the Paris Agreement.

The completion of these guidelines, together with increased national efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, further adaptation to climate change impacts, and support for developing countries to take climate action, will all be critical to achieving zero net emissions by 2050 and, ultimately, to keeping the global average temperature increase to as close to 1.5°C as possible.

2019 is being hailed as the “Year of Ambition.” A  high-level component of the event will take place on Wednesday, 20 March, bringing together ministers and senior leaders, including UN Climate Change Executive Secretary Patricia Espinosa, to  focus on key areas such as: carbon pricing and markets, as well as kickstarting the year of ambition (“A Race We Can Win’).

Governments, private sector and other stakeholders will gather in Accra throughout Climate Week, which also incorporates two days of related events (18-19 March), to promote the critical work being undertaken under the three transformational areas of policy, technology and finance.

Africa Climate Week is being organized by core partners including the World Bank Group, the African Development Bank,  the West African Development Bank (BOAD) UN Environment (UNEP), UNEP DTU Partnership,United Nations Development Programme (UNDP),  International Emissions Trading Association (IETA), Marrakech Partnership and United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

It will support the implementation of countries’ NDCs under the Paris Agreement and climate action to deliver on the Sustainable Development Goals.

Africa Climate Week will be opened by President Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana and UN Climate Change Executive Secretary Patricia Espinosa at a ceremony on Wednesday 20th March. It will bring together African ministers, policymakers, and representatives from business, finance, and city municipalities.
