African Water Facility Grant of 999 000 euros to the Kingdom of Swaziland

The AfDB group, on Wednesday, June 3, 2009, approved an African Water Facility grant of € 999,000 to Swaziland to finance the implementation of Phase II studies of the Lower Usuthu Smallholder Irrigation Project (LUSIP). The studies comprise feasibility studies for a 51 km extension of the main irrigation canal and the preparation of chiefdom development plans which include the provision of water supply and sanitation facilities in an area situated in the south-east of Swaziland. The study aims at supporting the country’s development efforts at ensuring food security and reducing poverty through the promotion of improved agricultural techniques and water management. The study will be implemented over a 20-month period. The Swaziland Water and Agricultural Development Enterprise will be responsible for the implementation of the study with the support of the African Water Facility.
