The AfDB hosts the 10th Regional Seminar of International Comparison Program for Africa in Tunis

02-May-2005 - "Is the number of people living in poverty declining?" The forthcoming International Comparison Program for Africa (ICP-Africa) Seminar on "Data Quality Control",  organized by the African Development Bank (AfDB), to be held in Hammamet, Tunisia on  9-11 May 2005, will intend to provide means to answer this question for the continent. Through ICP - Africa, for the first time, ADB is assessing comparative standards of living for a better future in Africa.

18-Apr-2005 - Tunis, 18 April 2005 – A Pan-African conference on "Promoting the Development of African Women in Business (AWIB) 1: Towards Economic and Social Leadership", opens at the Hotel Hilton Yaoundé in Cameroon on Monday, under the auspices of the Private Sector Department of the African Development Bank (ADB). The event is being co-organized with the African Network for Support to Women Entrepreneurs (ANSWE) and the International Labour Organisation (ILO).

Cofinancing Opportunity: Creation of Sustainable Tsetse and Trypanosomiasis Free Areas in Africa

18-Apr-2005 - The "Creation of Sustainable Tsetse and Trypanosomiasis Free Areas in West and East Africa" is a first phase project of a 37-country programme called the Pan-African Tsetse and Trypanosomiasis Eradication Campaign (PATTEC). PATTEC is one of the programmes approved by the African Union under the NEPAD Initiative. The programme strategy is based on the concept of Integrated Pest Management and the Area-Wide Approach. It will be implemented in a sustained and continuous manner through phased series of interlinked and coordinated projects.

Domestically, there is a need to deepen financial and banking sector reforms to enhance domestic resource mobilization. 07-Apr-2005 - The Acting Vice President for the North, South and East operations of the ADB Group, Mrs. Zeinab El Bakri, and the Ambassador of the Republic of Sierra Leone to Libya, Mr. Mohammed Samura, signed today in Tunis a loan for an amount of 12 million Units of Account (UA*), equivalent to US$ 18 million to support the Agricultural Sector Rehabilitation Project (ASREP) and a grant for an amount of UA 2.79 million (US$ 4.2 million) to finance the Institutional Support Project to Strengthen the Public Financial Management and the Energy Sectors.

AfDB to Host Great Lake Region’s Special Fund for Reconstruction and Development

26-Mar-2005 - Tunis, 26  March 2008 – The Board of Directors of the African Development Fund (ADF) on Wednesday in Tunis approved a proposal for the Bank Group to administer and manage resources for a special fund set up for the reconstruction and development of the Great Lakes Region (SFRD). The request will be submitted to the Bank Group’s Board of Governors for final approval.

AfDB Approves US$ 22.77 Million Debt Relief for The Gambia, endorses AfDB-World Bank Joint Assistance Strategy

26-Mar-2005 - Tunis, 26  March 2008 – The Board of Directors of the African Development Fund (ADF), on Wednesday in Tunis approved debt relief of  US$ 22.77 million in nominal terms for The Gambia, from January 2001 to July 2013, following the country’s qualification for the enhanced Highly Indebted Poor Countries Initiative (HIPC).

As International Community Observes World Water Day: The AfDB Reaffirms Commitment to Water Development

23-Mar-2005 - The statement noted that despite the central role water plays in national development and poverty reduction, the water sector in Africa is severely underdeveloped, with only 3% of the total renewable water resources exploited for water supply, agriculture and industrial use each year. As a result, nearly 50%, or over 300 million mostly poor people living in rural, peri-urban and urban areas, do not have access to safe water supply and adequate sanitation facilities.

AfDB supports Agricultural Development in Mauritius

16-Mar-2005 - The Board of Directors of the ADB Group approved on Wednesday in Tunis, a loan of 7.74 million Units of Account (UA*), equivalent to US$ 11.77 million to finance the Northern Plains Irrigation Project. The project will ensure the construction of irrigation systems in the northern region of the country, which accounts for 20% of the national sugar cane production and 25% of the food crops.

AfDB Approves Comprehensive Financial Package for PTA Bank

12-Mar-2005 - Tunis, 12 March 2008 – The Board of Directors of the African Development Bank (AfDB), through its private sector window, has approved a line of credit of US$ 50 million and an equity capital increase of US$ 6.8 million (payable) as well as US$ 40.8 million (callable) to support the Eastern and Southern African Trade and Development Bank, commonly known as the Preferential Trade Area or "PTA" Bank.

Accelerating the Implementation of NEPAD

07-Mar-2005 - The summit, which took place in Abuja, Nigeria, discussed broadly the question of accelerating the implementation of the NEPAD Short Term Action Plan (STAP) for infrastructure. In particular, the summit offered two days of intensive brainstorming on which mechanisms would be best suited to build capacity at the Regional Economic Communities (RECs) level.
