Accord Commission européenne-Banque africaine de développement : 60 millions d’euros pour l’interconnexion électrique Cameroun-Tchad et pour la Dorsale transsaharienne à fibre optique

08-Jan-2019 - La Commission européenne et la Banque africaine de développement ont procédé,- à la signature de deux accords de co-financement, au profit du projet d’interconnexion électrique entre le Cameroun et le Tchad et de la Dorsale transsaharienne à fibre optique (DTS). C’était le jeudi 20 décembre 2018, au siège de la Commission européenne à Bruxelles.

African Development Bank approves US$14.12 million to support Nigeria’s membership in African Trade Insurance (ATI) Agency

08-Jan-2019 - The African Development Bank Group, through its Trade Finance operations, has approved a US$14.12 million facility to support the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s membership in the African Trade Insurance Agency (ATI). This is a critical and mandatory step to enable ATI commence its operations in Nigeria. Nigeria, as Africa’s largest economy, joins 14 other African countries that have already signed up to ATI membership.

African Development Bank to raise over US$7 billion from capital markets for investment in African economies in 2019

27-Dec-2018 - Bank continues to build its profile in the capital markets for cost-effective resources to finance projects and programs in Regional Member Countries The African Development Bank’s Board has approved the institution’s 2019 borrowing program to the tune of US$7.24 billion from capital markets. The Bank accesses a wide array of capital markets with the majority of its borrowing in US dollars and Euros as well as issuances in other public markets such as Australian dollars and Pound sterling.

26-Dec-2018 - With more than 20,000 participants from over 190 countries, COP24 commenced in the hope that countries will create a rulebook that will turn the Paris climate agreement into reality and hold down rising temperature to well below 2 degrees. During the conference, countries focused on establishing rules, figuring out financing and devising ways to verify that nations are meeting their commitments.

As of November 2018, 189 Parties to the UNFCCC had ratified their NDCs, including 90% of African countries.

Egypt: President El-Sisi Inaugurates Bank-supported wastewater treatment plant

20-Dec-2018 - Egypt’s President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi on Saturday, 15 December 2018 inaugurated the El-Gabal El-Asfar wastewater treatment plant (Phase II – Stage II) in Cairo, with a delegation from the African Development Bank, led by Yacine Fal, Deputy Director General for North Africa. The visit to the project site was combined with the launch of a massive housing program for disadvantaged people who will benefit from improved housing as well as access to clean water.

Supporting transboundary actions to address climate change

20-Dec-2018 - Approximately 64% of the African Continent is found within a transboundary river or lake basin, or sits on a transboundary aquifer, containing 805 freshwater resources. As climate change exacerbates challenges already inherent in Africa’s hydrological cycle, and affects different parts of a watershed differently, it is clear that there is a need to highlight the importance of transboundary perspectives in adaptation and decision-making, and support efforts to include these within states planning and actions, including finance activities. 

“Desert to Power Initiative” for Africa

19-Dec-2018 - The African Development Bank (AfDB) has said a lack of energy remains as a significant impediment to Africa’s economic and social development. As a result the AfDB has embarked on a huge desert solar initiative to make Africa a renewable power-house titled “Desert to Power Initiative”. This solar project is set to stretch across the Sahel region and expected to connect 250 million people with electricity by tapping into the region’s abundant solar resource.

African Development Fund Board approves US$149 million credit risk participations by the Private Sector Credit Enhancement Facility in seven private sector operations targeting low-income countries.

19-Dec-2018 - The Board of Directors of the African Development Fund (ADF), the concessional window of the African Development Bank Group, approved on 14 December 2018, credit risk participations by the Private Sector Credit Enhancement Facility (PSF) in seven loans cumulatively valued at US$149 million. Launched in 2015 by the ADF, the PSF provides credit risk participations in private sector operations of the African Development Bank in low-income countries, and is on its way to building a US$1.5 billion portfolio of exposures.
