06-Feb-2022 - The African Leaders for Nutrition initiative, housed at the African Development Bank, has been honored by the African Union for progress made toward advancing investments in nutrition across the continent. At the conclusion of the 35th Ordinary Session of the African Union Assembly on Sunday, an African Union summary decision commended “the African Leaders for Nutrition initiative in sustaining nutrition advocacy in the effort to ensure member states commit adequate financial resources to nutrition interventions.”

06-Feb-2022 - African Development Bank Group President Dr Akinwumi Adesina has said that the most important lesson of the Covid-19 pandemic for Africa is the need to build a defense mechanism against external shocks, especially in healthcare and financial security. “Investing in health is investing in national security,” Adesina told African leaders on Saturday, at the opening of the 35th African Union Assembly in the Ethiopian capital. “Africa cannot afford to outsource the healthcare security of its 1.4 billion citizens to the benevolence of others.”

Cabo Verde launches Bank-funded capital markets project

04-Feb-2022 - The government of Cabo Verde has launched a project to propel the development of vibrant capital markets in the country. The Bank approved a $350,000 grant from its Capital Markets Development Trust Fund in October 2021 to help develop the country’s first-ever Capital Markets Masterplan. The funds will also facilitate the expansion of domestic fixed-income markets by upgrading existing infrastructure.

Adesina has reiterated the Bank’s commitment to ensuring that the continent’s 1.4 billion people gain greater access to quality healthcare. Adesina spoke during a visit to Senegal’s Institut Pasteur de Dakar, a biomedical research center that has been at the forefront of Africa’s fight against Covid-19. Calling for an end to vaccine inequality, Adesina observed that “people are talking about the third, fourth, and even fifth dose while in Africa we are still looking for the first dose.”

The honor was conferred at the institution’s 38th Founders’ Day and 30th Convocation ceremony of the University, in Minna on Wednesday. Adesina joined three others honorary doctoral awardees, namely former Nigerian Head of State General Abdulsalam Abubakar (GCFR), Alhaji Abdul Samad Rabiu, (CON) and Malam Mele Kolo Kyari.

The Bank has just approved a plan to accelerate its infrastructure drive.   The African Development Bank Group has taken a crucial step to further address the infrastructure gap in African countries, with the approval of its first strategic framework for the development of public-private partnerships. This follows approval by the Board of Directors of the Bank Group on 19 January 2022.
