Bank Discusses Independent Review Mechanism
Tunis, 15 June 2007 - The Compliance Review and Mediation Unit (CRMU) on Friday in Tunis met with the Bank’s Private sector (OPSM) and Environmentalists to discuss compliance review issues and problem-solving. Discussions followed the presentation by the CRMU Director, Per Eldar Sovik, of the Bank Group’s Independent Review Mechanism and another presentation by the IFC’s Compliance Advisers/Ombudsman. "Directors of operational departments are strongly advised to assist in making staff and project beneficiaries aware of the review mechanism. Only when people are well informed about their rights and possibilities to use the mechanism can the objectives of the IRM be fulfilled," Mr. Sovik said. The Independent Review Mechanism has been established to provide people adversely affected by a Bank-financed project with the possibility to request the Bank to comply with its own policies and procedures. Participants in the meeting included OPSM.5 Division Manager, Mohamed Bourenane, and OIVP Lead Environmentalist, Yogesh Vyas, as well as their teams. The meeting was also attended by the IFC Compliance Adviser/Ombudsman, Meg Taylor, and IFC Ombudsman, Kate Kopischke.
