President Donald Kaberuka was in Beijing over the weekend and took part in a three-day China-Africa Summit. Attended by more than 40 African Heads of State and Government, the summit resulted in the signing of a joint declaration and an action plan for 2007-2009. Besides the many contracts that were signed, new commitments relating to debt reduction and cooperation in the area of education were also made. The Chinese government also used the Summit to review 50 years of China-Africa relations. China on Saturday committed itself to participating in Africa’s development by doubling its financial aid and partially writing off the debt of some African countries. In opening the largest diplomatic event the country has ever organized, Chinese President, Hu Jintao, announced a series of measures that would lead to a mutually beneficial cooperation.
