CRMU Hosts Seminar for Civil Society Organizations
Tunis, June 26, 2008 - The Bank Group’s Compliance Review and Mediation Unit (CRMU) hosted a Seminar for Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) on independent accountability mechanisms in Tunis on June, 26-27, 2008. The seminar, which came on the heels of the 5th Annual Meeting of the Principals of Independent Accountability Mechanisms, aimed at raising awareness of the existence of accountability mechanisms and at learning from the experiences of CSOs with regard to complaints from and redress to people adversely affected by projects. Almost 20 international and local CSO representatives from 11 African countries attended the seminar. Besides presentations by the CRMU Director and the principals of the accountability mechanisms of the Asian Development Bank, European Investment Bank, Inter-American Development Bank, Overseas Private Investment Corporation, International Finance Corporation and World Bank, the AfDB’s Principal Population/ Civil Society Officer, Prosper Poukouta, displayed various ways in which civil society can engage with the Bank throughout the project cycle. Officials from accountability mechanisms and CSO representatives engaged in fruitful discussions on how to further enhance the effectiveness, transparency and accessibility of accountability mechanisms.
