Suzy, as her customers fondly call her, is proof of the valuable contribution that women-led businesses make to the agriculture sector. And, despite a lack of access to finance and gender stereotypes, Suzy’s business is flourishing.

Angola: African Development Bank funds $530 million electricity project to expand renewable energy and regional connectivity

16-Mar-2021 - The African Development Bank has committed $530 million to finance the construction of a 343 km, 400 kV central-south transmission line that will connect the north and south transmission grids in Angola and allow for the distribution of clean energy between the two regions. The north of Angola has a surplus of more than 1,000 MW of mostly renewable power, whereas the south relies on expensive diesel generators, supported by government subsidies.

Speaking at the launch of the Bank’s African Economic Outlook 2021 report on Friday, Adesina decried the lack of Covid-19 vaccines reaching Africa. “We need global solidarity and vaccine justice for Africa,” Africa’s premier development bank chief said.

Africa Fertilizer Financing Mechanism (AFFM) Governing Council Members commit to more action for the financing of the fertilizer sector

15-Mar-2021 - The Governing Council of the Africa Fertilizer Financing Mechanism (AFFM) issued a  call for greater action to secure adequate financing for the continent’s fertilizer sector at its ninth meeting. During a virtual meeting held 3 March and attended by 13 institutional members, the Governing Council adopted AFFM’s report on 2020 activities and endorsed a work program for 2021.

Integrity in Development Projects: African Development Bank issues Letter of Reprimand to Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. for sanctionable practice

15-Mar-2021 - The African Development Bank Group (“AfDB”), on 2 February 2021, issued a sanction decision against Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (“MHI”). This matter arises in the context of the Abu Qir 1300 MW Steam Power Project (hereinafter referred to as the “Project”) in Egypt. On 15 January 2008, the Bank entered into a loan agreement with the Arab Republic of Egypt to finance part of the Project which had a broad objective of improving the electricity supply in Egypt. MHI, as part of a consortium, submitted a bid and was awarded the contract.

Stiglitz, a recipient of the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 2001, was speaking on Friday at the virtual launch of the African Development Bank’s 2021 African Economic Outlook report during a conversation with Bank President Dr. Akinwumi A. Adesina.

12-Mar-2021 - Despite the challenging backdrop of a global pandemic and external economic shocks, Africa is expected to recover from its worst recession in half a century and reach 3.4 percent growth in 2021, the African Development Bank said in its 2021 African Economic Outlook report, launched on Friday. The outbreak of the novel coronavirus in December 2019 has taken a massive toll on Africa, hitting tourism-dependent economies, oil-exporting economies and other-resource intensive economies the hardest, as well as deepening inequality.

Ethiopia: African Development Bank approves $2.33 million grant to support the modernization of electronic payments infrastructure

10-Mar-2021 - The Board of Directors of the African Development Bank has approved a grant of $2.33 million to EthSwitch Share Company, an initiative led by National Bank of Ethiopia, for the modernization of its payments infrastructure. The grant is resourced from the special fund of the Africa Digital Financial Inclusion Facility (ADFI), a pan African initiative that aims to facilitate digital financial inclusion for an estimated 332M unbanked population across the African continent, 60% of whom are women.
