03-Mar-2021 - Women farmers in Tanzania have harnessed solar technology to reduce post-harvest losses, enhancing food security, panelists learned at an African Development Bank event held February to launch its Gender and Energy brief on the status of gender mainstreaming in Tanzania’s energy sector.

Egypt: the African Development Bank approves a loan of over $27 million to establish Kom Ombo solar power plant

03-Mar-2021 - The African Development Bank’s Board of Directors today approved $27.2 million in loan financing for the design, construction and operation of a 200 MW photovoltaic solar power plant at Kom Ombo, in Upper Egypt on the river Nile.   The project is expected to lower electricity costs for businesses and residences, as well as reducing greenhouse gas emissions and creating construction and other jobs.

Egypt hosted the virtual, second edition of the meeting, titled Shaping Africa’s New Normal: Recovering Stronger, Rebuilding Better’. A significant part of the discussion centered on providing access to COVID-19 vaccinations and to healthcare more generally.

02-Mar-2021 - The second edition of the Aswan Forum on peace, security and development opened on Monday, 1 March in Cairo, Egypt, with African leaders identifying insecurity and the burden of debt as the most pressing challenges to the continent’s post-COVID development. The virtual opening session, chaired by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, was on the subject of "Shaping Africa's New Normal: Recovering Stronger, Rebuilding Better". The African Development Bank is a strategic partner of the Forum, which runs until 5 March.

African Legal Support Facility receives £2.6 million from Norway, UK, to boost debt management capacity, other activities in low-income countries

01-Mar-2021 - The governments of Norway and the United Kingdom have extended grants of around £2.6 million to the African Legal Support Facility (ALSF) to support its activities over the next two years. The Norwegian government, through its Agency for Development Cooperation, provided 20 million Norwegian kroner (around £1.6 million) to support the 2021 and 2022 work programs of the ALSF.

Uganda: Push for women’s access to energy will boost economic participation and gender equality

01-Mar-2021 - Uganda is implementing initiatives to enhance women's access to clean energy in the form of energy-efficient cooking stoves and home lighting solutions, which will accelerate progress toward gender equality and increase women’s participation in the economy. At a virtual workshop held on 23 February, Uganda’s Minister of State for Energy and Mineral Development Simon D'Ujanga said the ministry was pushing ahead with initiatives to expand women’s access to clean energy solutions and tackle gender violence.
