“Betting on Africa to Feed the World”: Adesina, 2017 World Food Prize Laureate, to deliver Norman Borlaug Lecture on World Food Day

13-Oct-2017 - The African Development Bank President, Akinwumi Adesina, will deliver the Norman Borlaug Lecture as part of the World Food Prize events taking place from October 16-20, 2017 in Des Moines, Iowa, USA. The Norman Borlaug Lecture titled “Betting on Africa to Feed the World” will be held on World Food Day, October 16, in conjunction with the annual World Food Prize celebration. President Adesina will receive the 2017 World Food Prize on Thursday, October 19. The prize is to agriculture what the Nobel Prize is to peace, science and literature.

05-Oct-2017 - The African Development Bank (AfDB) has issued the first “Light Up and Power Africa” Bond for SEK 733 million (approximately JPY 10 billion) sold to the Dai-ichi Life Insurance Company, Limited, the sole investor in the transaction.   The “Light Up and Power Africa” Bond supports AfDB’s ambition to achieve an important goal of realizing Africa’s energy potential and bridging the continent’s energy deficit.  

With ALSF support, Guinea-Bissau successfully renegotiates and reduces outstanding debts by 90%

03-Oct-2017 - Following an official request for support from the Government of Guinea-Bissau, the African Legal Support Facility (ALSF) has provided creditor litigation support and advisory services to Guinea-Bissau during outstanding debt negotiations with the Export-Import Bank of China (Exim Bank). The support led to a series of settlement and debt-restructuring negotiations concluded in Singapore. Guinea-Bissau and Exim Bank agreed to a 90% reduction in outstanding debt obligations, resulting in savings of over US$45 million for Guinea-Bissau.

Mbembe makes a strong case for African integration through open borders

02-Oct-2017 - Renowned African historian, Joseph Achille Mbembe, has made a solid case for Africa’s integration through open borders that allow free movement of people on the continent. “History tells us that the first thing you do to incapacitate people is to restrict their ability to move.  Mobility allowed the stretching of societies; was determinant to trade and to building African civilizations,” Mbembe said.
