“I think this synergy with the AfDB is useful as it helps African development financial institutions mitigate the impact of the financial crisis and help Africans cope with it,” the Abidjan-based AADFI Secretary-General, Joseph Alfred Amihere, said.
Question: What are your expectations at the Annual Meetings being held in Senegal?
Answer: In fact, the theme is appropriate as it focuses on the financial crisis, which is very relevant to AADFI member institutions. As you know, the AfDB is our major partner as it supports our institution. We are using the opportunity here in Dakar to discuss with the AfDB management, as well as with major commercial banks representatives. On May 11, AADFI organised its Annual General Assembly which was highly attended in collaboration with the AfDB. Discussions were fruitful.
Question: What do you think the AADFI and the AfDB can do together to help member countries cope with the global financial crisis?
Answer: The AADFI, as an umbrella organisation of African development finance institutions (DFIs), has members in all African countries. This is the reason why during the Association’s General Assembly organized here in Dakar, we invited the Bank Group’s Vice-President for finance to exchange views on managing the foreign exchange risk of DFIs in light of the global economic crisis. The issues raised by the VP on the crisis required a follow-up program by way of training to enable our members launch a risk management programme in their respective countries. The AADFI and the AfDB will therefore jointly organize such a training to enable African development finance institutions assist countries to mitigate the impacts of the global economic crisis. I think this synergy with the AfDB is useful, because it helps African development financial institutions take measures to mitigate the crisis and help people in Africa cope with it.
