Delegates from 14 Middle Income Countries (MIC) met in Tunis on 13 March 2006 at a consultation meeting jointly organized by the African Development Bank and the World Bank, to discuss recent initiatives undertaken by both institutions to enhance Multilateral Development Banks engagement with MICs, and identify constraints MICs face in their relationships with MDBs and steps required to remain relevant and help them meet their development challenges.
The President of the ADB Group, Dr Donald Kaberuka, in his speech delivered on his behalf by ADB Finance Vice President de Longuemar highlighted the importance of MDBs working together to avoid wasteful competition, MDBs increased attention to enhancing operational effectiveness and the need to revisit the criteria for classification of the MICs to incorporate other emerging factors.
Mr. Kaberuka said "The provision of effective assistance to MICs is crucial if we, as MDBs, are to fulfill our mandate of improving the socio-economic development of all our regional member countries. For the ADB, support to MICs is an important part of our overall effort to enhance development effectiveness, achieve management for results, as well as strengthen harmonization and build strategic partnerships".
