Sustainable and responsible tourism driving development in Africa

24-Jan-2017 - The United Nations has declared 2017 as "International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development", with the official launch by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) on January 18 in Madrid. On this occasion, UNWTO Secretary-General Taleb Rifai put the continued growth of tourism into figures: “In 2016, more than 1.2 billion people travelled around the world for tourism purposes and another 6 billion people travelled domestically,” he said, highlighting the need to promote more sustainable tourism.

Enabling direct access to climate finance in Africa

23-Jan-2017 - “Out of US $331 billion of global climate finance flows in 2014, only 3.6% went to Africa. If only 3.6%, despite Africa’s vulnerability to climate change, something must be wrong”. This, according to Luc Gnacadja, Special Representative for the Board of the Local Climate Adaptive Living Facility (LoCAL).

Financé par le Fonds africain de développement (FAD) du Groupe de la BAD, à hauteur de 20,99 millions d’Unités de Compte (UC) - environ 32 millions de dollars -, ce projet profitera à environ 2 millions de personnes, contribuant notamment à améliorer leurs conditions de  santé.

UN World Data Forum wraps up with launch of Cape Town Global Action Plan for Sustainable Development Data

20-Jan-2017 - The inaugural United Nations World Data Forum concluded Wednesday with the launch of a global plan for better data to improve people’s lives, and new ideas and solutions to boost the collaboration, resources and policies needed to put it into action. The Cape Town Global Action Plan for Sustainable Development Data, which will be adopted by countries at the UN Statistical Commission when it meets in March of this year, was prepared with inputs from the global statistical community and data experts from a wider range of stakeholders.

AfDB approves US $20 million for Meridian’s soft commodity value chain operations in Southern Africa

20-Jan-2017 - The African Development Bank has approved a US $20 million facility to finance Meridian’s operations in Malawi, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. This Soft Commodity Finance Facility is designed to provide pre- and post-shipment finance along various stages of Meridian’s soft commodity value chain operations in the three countries concerned, to help local farmers and soft commodity suppliers to grow their revenues and produce quality crops for export.

AfDB approves US $1-million humanitarian emergency grant to Tanzania to mitigate effects of earthquake in Kagera region

19-Jan-2017 - People affected by the earthquake which hit the Kagera region, in northwestern Tanzania, in September last year will get some relief from a humanitarian emergency grant approved by the African Development Bank Group’s Board last week. The assistance will help to meet urgent needs of primary and secondary schools in the earthquake affected areas, and restore learning activities. Kagera region in northwestern Tanzania was hit by a 5.9-magnitude earthquake on Saturday, September 10, 2016, resulting in 17 deaths and 440 injured people.
